I got it that this is a bit redundant (see Protein Doping on January 4, 2015) but since this question is asked at least a million times an hour across America by people genuinely worried about their friends who eschew meat, it warrants another round.
The simple answer is that I get my protein from almost everything I put into my mouth. Mainly I get it from vegetables.
The question seems silly since it is invariably always asked of people who don’t eat meat. If they don’t eat meat, then, isn’t it obvious that they would get their protein from meat-less sources, like vegetation? Legumes. Vegetables.
Funny thing is, the question is also asked of so-called vegetarians who get most of their calories from animal fat and animal protein – that expansive set of the population who gives up meat in order to overdose on dairy. So if the questions come from one who is mainly wondering where you get your “animal protein,” then it would be similarly obvious that you would be getting it from all the dairy products you are consuming.
I would love to have one dollar for every time a diary-doping “vegetarian” has told me that he or she had to give up being a “vegetarian” because lack of protein caused them to be tired and listless. Hmmm? First – what lack of protein? These folk are doping on animal protein with every sip of milk and dollop of cream and snippet of cheese. Second – tired and listless? Does that sound like a manifestation of protein deficiency. I DON’T THINK SO!!
Sounds like a lack of starch – complex carbohydrates. Do Marathoners load up on dietary protein before the big race? Or dietary fat? Nope. If dairy-loving “vegetarians” are noticing a drop in energy from cutting out meat, they are suffering from substituting one bad diet with one that is even worse.
Protein deficiency – the last thing to worry about in America!
